The Rare Ship Meme!

( Jan. 24th, 2010 10:35 pm)
Hey everyone! I've been pretty MiA lately, haven't I? Nothing much really to report other than I found a shitty part-time job that has the worst commute ever which might be replaced by a less shitty full-time job that pays a lot more in the near future if I hear from the person I spoke with and the same commute but more money > 400 buses and a ferry. Time will tell. But it goes to show that sometimes public transit brings hope instead of drunken bus-crazies.

I seriously hope I get the better job, though, because money is incredibly tight. Like, tight to the point of chosing which bills not to pay in order to be able to buy groceries. Long story, with lots of bawwwww involved. Sigh.

Anyway, New Year's resolution this year (I don't usually do them but this year I made an exception) is to read 50 books. I've already done three, which is okay, and I'll do a writeup on them in my next entry, but now I'm looking for recs. Mystery, thriller, fantasy, I like 'em all. To give you an idea what I'm looking for, I really like David Baldacci's work and have read just about everything of his. FBI and CIA thrillers, espionage, international politics, stuff like that. Steve Berry is also one of my favorite authors. I've read everything of his, but thrillers with historical secrets and intrigues, stuff like that. I'm in the middle of reading George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, so epic fantasies like that are to my taste. I'm a fan of Good Omens, so sarcastic humor and interesting takes on religious themes like that would be welcome. I've read and enjoyed Kim Wilkins' Giants of the Frost (as well as The Autumn Castle but didn't enjoy it as much) and would really like to see more modern takes on mythology like that. Also, terrible romance novels are a guilty pleasure. I enjoy mocking them.

Or really anything you care to recommend. I just got myself a library card (I KNOW IT TOOK ME FOREVER I'VE BEEN LIVING HERE FOR TWO YEARS) in December, so I have access to most everything and will give nearly anything a try!

And lastly, while I'm here talking about books, I would like to recommend I, Che Guevara for anyone that likes politics. I mean I don't even really like politics much, and this book made my list of books I like. Cuban politics with American interference and a sort of "what if Che Guevara never died?" sort of thing. Highly enjoyable and thought-provoking, at least for me.

IT HAS BEEN AGES SINCE LAST I POSTED. I finished The Demon's Lexicon. Wasn't terribly impressed. I've been baking some recently. I don't have pictures this time, but I do have a recipe for those interested. They were some pretty good brownies, which were meant to be turned into a sort of brownie-cookie hybrid, but by the time the batter was mixed I was feeling sick to my stomach and unwilling to put the extra effort into the cookie-molding bit of the recipe.

in here is a recipe )

My brother has been in town for a week, and decided that we're going to a convention. I may try to enter the fanfic contest, though I hold little hope of winning anything. But what do I have to lose, besides my self-esteem, right? WE SHALL SEE. We may not even be going, so I'll wait until that gets decided.

My uncle is also staying with us for a while. It's not so bad, except for the part where HE AND MY BROTHER DON'T PUT THE TOILET SEAT DOWN AFTER THEY PEE. I have -not- missed sharing a bathroom with dudes at all. AT ALL. *rages*

Uhhh, I had something else to say, but it's gone now.

Oh wait. I've been listening to a lot of silly pop songs about love. It makes one lonely.

Also there is going to be a garage sale here in six hours and I want to kill myself. HOPEFULLY THE RAIN KEEPS UP AND WE WON'T HAVE TO DO IT. Ugh my aunt is gonna be here. I'm a little tired of her, honestly. This wedding cruise thing is making everyone crazy, especially me. Since I'm the one trying to coordinate everyone and everything. SOMEONE PLEASE PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY.

I've been wanting to rewatch the X-Files recently.

That is all.

The Demon's Lexicon has arrived.

BRB in a few hours once I've read it.

EDIT: it wrong of me to derive pleasure from opening a previously-unopened book? Something about the cracking of a stiff spine just... yeah that's starting to sound more sexual than I intended I'll stop now.

IT'S BEEN FOREVER SINCE I'VE POSTED ANYTHING but I don't really have anything of interest to post. I just wanted to do this meme that's been going around because it amused me.

1. You can ONLY answer 'Yes' or 'No'.

2. You are NOT ALLOWED to explain ANYTHING unless someone comments you and asks— and, believe me, the temptation to explain some of these will be overwhelming. Nothing is exactly as it seems.

Some of these I want to answer  )

Icons get finally!

I think I really hate the not-white background of the whole site. What's wrong with plain white for the main site? It's the biggest problem I had with insanejournal too. IT'S REALLY UNATTRACTIVE AFTER A WHILE.

Also, the lack of being able to customize anything really. What the hell why am I staying here if my "reading list" (also retarded. And kind of feels distant, whereas the people you follow on LJ are "friends". It seems to foster more of a community feel over there, where this is almost like some anonymous RSS feed :|) is eyebleeding? UNLESS SOMEONE CAN SHOW ME WHERE THE PRETTY COLORS ARE, I'M PROBABLY LEAVING THIS PLACE ALONE UNTIL THEY HAVE DECENT COLORS AND STYLES TO WORK WITH.

Except to set up the comms, because I'm ridiculously excited about that project. Must get started.

Also, I have a job. YAY FINALLY.

Woo Dreamwidth woo! I HAVE PLANS FOR YOU. BIG ONES.

Okay... well... maybe not -big- ones per se, but you're new enough to grab the comm names (mostly grumble gripe complain) that I want for this thing I've been wanting to do for a long while.

Brb setting up us the bomb.

And maybe choosing 6 pictures to upload, and weeping from the tiny number.

[ profile] degrees: So I was making a cake for dad's birthday, right?
[ profile] degrees: I didn't want to use a box mix, I wanted to do it from scratch
[ profile] degrees: I get everything mixed together, pop it in the oven, and then make cookies and cream frosting (OMG GOOD)
[ profile] shahni: Uh-huhhhh?
[ profile] degrees: And in 30 minutes I check it. It was still sort of soupy so I figured it was because the cake pan was made of silicone or something
[ profile] degrees: So I left it in there a while, came back and checked it again, same problem
[ profile] degrees: And again, and agian
[ profile] degrees: Cake stayed in the oven for more than an hour

Dreamvomit time!

Okay so I had the strangest dream last night. It started out where I was a student at some university. I don't know which, and it's nowhere I've ever been before. But in the dream I had the feeling that I'd gone there before, and I was back after a long period of being away. I met some people that I had apparently known before, and was friends with. I promised a few of them we'd get together and afterwards I went to my classes. The classes I just barely remember. But I had promised one girl and her friends that I would meet with her later on in the week, or month, the time was sort of ambiguous, for lunch. And then I forgot, until the day of, when someone was like "Oh, they thought you weren't coming, they're over at the restaurant." That restaurant seemed like a really nice one, although it was on the university campus. But it was like a four star restaurant or something. Anyway the girl I was meeting was happy to see me and we ate and it ended up that I was going to be late for class.

But oh shit, I couldn't remember which class I had next.

Which turned out okay because we had an assembly about... something, I don't remember what, instead of classes.

And then suddenly the dream switched and I had randomly gotten the part in some musical production that I hadn't even auditioned for. It was a male part, but I didn't care. It was one of the four leads, too. So the musical is performed (yeah I skipped all the rehearsing part in the dream and went straight to the performance), and it felt like it was being put on in a high school gymnasium rather than a university's theater. It was sort of weird. Anyway all seemed to go well except for the end. For some reason, we were performing on the floor of the gym, rather than up on stage, but in the middle we had to move to the stage and do our thing. And the last song of the musical was just the four leads. So we got off the stage and back onto the floor and started singing. It was me, two other guys, and a girl. So three male parts and a female part. I don't know if that's relevant, I just thought I should explain. Anyway, I got the feeling in the dream that I had a thing for one of the dudes, but he was really into the one girl.

Anyway we start singing, and something goes wrong. I don't remember what, but we go back to our original places and try to start again. And then something else goes wrong. And it keeps happening a couple more times, until finally we're like okay this time we're just going to finish no matter what. So we start singing and doing our thing, and suddenly this huge bus -- the bus that the people in the play came to this place in -- crashes through the wall and explodes. Glass flies everywhere, and people are injured. The dude I'm into is really worried about the other girl, and is trying to protect her. And I've got chunks of glass in my arms and my face, and people are screaming and there's fire and it's really scary.

And something happens, and randomly some of the people who were performing had been taken away, kidnapped I guess. And there had apparently been this cat with light-colored fur that had been spreading a disease around the gym. Everyone had it. And so I'm out trying to find the place where the people are being kept, and I find it. It's this house on a street that reminds me of a street near my old middle school. So I go to the house, around back, and there's a set of stairs leading to the basement. And there's a black cat. And for some reason, I know that this black cat has the black plague, and is going to try to give it to me. I've already got the other disease, so I'm not worried about the light-colored cat, but I'm not about to get another one from this cat. And I still have glass hanging out of me and I'm bleeding.

So I try to throw the cat so it won't touch me, but it comes back. I try to kick it, but it doesn't do anything. I do something to crush it, but it picks itself up and runs toward me. IT WAS REALLY FREAKY. So finally I end up crushing its head and it's this misshapen thing, but it's still alive. But it's not as quick, so I'm able to slip into the basement door and shut it, and the cat can't get me any more. And I find the people that had been taken. The person who had taken them was there also, but I don't remember who it turned out being. And then there was something about strawberries and whipped cream in waffle bowls given out to everyone, that may or may not have contained poison. But I woke up.
